First Man to be Second
First Man to be Second is a short story written by Alison Barron. In it, Dave stumbles through the worst day of his life, squirming between his past and our future. His resentment strips him of his joy, pride, and relationships.
KEY FEATURES: CYNICAL, ANGRY, NIHILIST, PARAGRAPHS OF TEXT
A punk aesthetic expresses the cynical tone of the piece and the aggression of the main character. Its overwrought style is meant to capture the foreboding in the story and the characters' self-absorption and nihilism.
Torn edges made a particularly valuable addition to the visual vocabulary. They became the way to demarcate Dave's inner monologue from the world around him. This gave his resentment and memories an appropriate weight and allowed them to literally interrupt the life unfolding before him.
